Seminar: Multi-faceted Influences of Generative AI in Education
On Tuesday, July 2nd, at 11:00 AM, in Aula Buzano - DISMA, Professor Josh Burridge from the Teaching and Learning Lab, Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, University of Melbourne, Australia, delivered a seminar titled "Multi-faceted Influences of Generative AI in Education."
The widespread accessibility of generative AI, particularly following the release of ChatGPT, has profoundly impacted the education sector in an immediate and somewhat hasty manner, reminiscent of the sudden shifts prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic. As we transition from this initial 'emergency' response, we are beginning to witness genuine paradigm shifts in teaching and learning methodologies. However, this evolution leads us into largely uncharted territory with few established guidelines.
In this seminar, Professor Burridge discussed various challenges and opportunities presented by generative AI. These paradigm shifts can be categorized into key pillars of influence, extending beyond the immediate concern of students using AI to cheat. Topics included the integration of AI into academic material development workflows, the application of AI in engineering and IT industry settings, and the necessity for students to acquire these skills for their future careers. Additionally, Professor Burridge introduced current research and teaching projects aimed at addressing these emerging questions.
This seminar provided valuable insights into the evolving role of generative AI in education and its broader implications for the future.
